How Much Do Movers Charge Per Hour in Oklahoma City?

Most full-service local movers charge an hourly rate based on the size of the moving crew. At Thunder Moving, our current base rate is:

2 movers + a 24-foot moving truck: $160 per hour

Each additional mover or packer is $60 per hour.

That means our standard crew rates are:

• 2 movers + truck: $160/hour
• 3 movers + truck: $220/hour
• 4 movers + 2 trucks: $320/hour

A two-hour minimum applies to all moves.

When comparing moving companies, however, don't look at the hourly rate alone. One of the most important questions to ask is when the hourly clock starts. At Thunder Moving, the clock starts when our crew arrives at your location and stops when the job is finished. We don't use part of your two-hour minimum to cover the drive from our truck lot to your home. For moves within the Oklahoma City metro, we instead charge a flat $75 local travel fee per truck.

These are estimates to give a general idea, rather than actual quotes. Your specific move could be higher or lower depending on how much you own, how prepared the home is, stairs, walking distances, specialty items, and other factors. The estimates above include Thunder Moving's standard $75 per truck OKC metro travel fee and $20 materials fee.

Why Can Two Similar Homes Cost Different Amounts to Move?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about moving estimates. Imagine two families who each live in a 1,500-square-foot home. The first family has already packed everything into labeled boxes. The beds are disassembled, the garage has been cleaned out, and the moving truck can park directly in front of both houses.

The second home still has loose items throughout the house, a packed garage, furniture upstairs, and a long walk from the front door to where the truck can park.

Those moves may have identical square footage, but they're not going to take the same amount of time. That's why a good moving estimate needs to consider more than the size of your house.

How Much Stuff You Have

The amount you're actually moving is usually more important than the number of bedrooms listed on your real estate listing.

A minimalist four-bedroom home can sometimes be easier to move than a heavily furnished two-bedroom home with a packed garage.

Stairs and Multiple Stories

Stairs slow down a move and can make additional manpower worthwhile.

At Thunder Moving, we generally recommend an additional crew member for multi-story moves and homes over approximately 1,700 square feet.

While another mover increases the hourly rate, the larger crew can often complete the move faster.

How Far the Crew Has to Walk

Truck access matters.

If your movers can park directly outside the front door, loading can move quickly. Apartment hallways, elevators, gated buildings, limited parking, and long driveways can add considerable time over the course of a move.

How Prepared You Are

This is one of the factors you have the most control over.

If you're trying to keep your moving bill down, have boxes packed, sealed, and labeled before the crew arrives.

Disconnect electronics, clear pathways through the home, and decide what is and isn't moving ahead of time.

The less time your movers spend waiting or figuring out what goes where, the less time you're paying for.

Oversized and Specialty Items

Pianos, safes, exercise equipment, unusually heavy furniture, and other specialty items may require additional equipment or manpower.

Tell your moving company about these items when you request your estimate rather than waiting until moving day.

What Other Fees Should You Ask a Moving Company About?

A low hourly rate doesn't always mean a low final bill. Before booking any Oklahoma City moving company, ask about:

Clear the walkways. Make it easy for your movers to safely get from each room to the truck.

Disassemble what you can. If you're comfortable taking apart bed frames and similar furniture beforehand, that's less time the moving crew needs to spend doing it.

Tell your mover about specialty items. Having the correct crew and equipment from the beginning prevents delays.
